England Unveils New 10-Pound Note Featuring Jane Austen

People in period costume display the new £10 note featuring Jane Austen which marks the 200th anniversary of Austen's death during the unveiling at Winchester Cathedral England Tuesday J

Two hundred years after Jane Austen died, a 10-pound note featuring an image of one of England's most revered authors has been unveiled - right where she was buried.

It is also the first Bank of England note to include a tactile feature to help visually impaired people.

The coin will initially only be available in tills at key locations in the Winchester and Basingstoke areas that have connections with Austen, including Winchester Cathedral and the Jane Austen House Museum.

The polymer bill, worth about S$17.80 at current exchange rates, will join the £5 polymer note featuring former prime minister Winston Churchill, which was introduced past year.

The new 10-pound note, which is due to go into circulation on September 14, is the bank's latest effort to make its notes more secure.

The new £10 note will be issued on 14 September 2017 and the public will begin to see them in the following days and weeks as the notes leave cash centres around the country and enter general circulation. She was chosen after a campaign for more female representation.

The quotation: "I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading!" is uttered by a character called Caroline Bingley who in fact has no interest in books and is merely trying to impress Mr Darcy, a potential suitor.

"It works on many levels", he said. The Bank of England also says that along with the portrait of Austen, the note also has an illustration of one of her most beloved characters, Elizabeth Bennet. apart from the Queen, Austen will be the only woman to appear on a modern British banknote.

A polymer 20-pound note, featuring J.M.W. Turner, is planned for 2020.

A portrait of Jane Austen commissioned by James Edward Austen Leigh (Jane Austen's nephew) in 1870, adapted from an original sketch of Jane Austen drawn by her sister, Cassandra Austen.

The Bank of England has said that the paper £10 note will be withdrawn in Spring 2018, with an exact date to be announced at least three months in advance. "Austen's novels have a universal appeal and speak as powerfully today as they did when they were first published", he added. The bills used a tallow, or hard, fatty substance usually made from rendered meat, as part of their base.
