The United States Senate Judiciary committee wrote a letter to Donald Trump Jr. on Thursday, asking him to testify before the committee, Chairman Chuck Grassley told CNN on Thursday.
Sen. Dianne Feinstein, the committee's ranking member, reportedly intends to make the request as well.
The move comes after Trump Jr. not only admitted he met with a Russian government attorney in an attempt to obtain damaging information on then-presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, but on Tuesday posted a four-page email showing he arranged the meeting.
A spokesman for Grassley said Wednesday afternoon that Grassley was working with Mueller to ensure that any plans to question Manafort don't conflict with any criminal investigation, and that if conflicts do exist, the senator will "work to find a way for the committee to proceed with its oversight responsibility".
The scope of congressional investigations into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential contest came into sharper focus on Wednesday as lawmakers said they meant to question the former chairman of the Trump campaign and to determine whether Russian social media "trolls" were connected to Trump's election efforts.
Grassley noted he intends to question Manafort on the Foreign Agent Registration Act, including on his role in the meeting between Donald Trump Jr. and Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya in June 2016. Michael Flynn, Trump's ousted former national security adviser, filed paperwork earlier this year admitting that he had done lobbying that benefited the Turkish government while advising Trump's campaign. "From what I've seen so far from meetings with Mr. Wray and from looking at his record, he appears to possess these qualifications".
His panel is investigating Russian meddling in the USA election. Susan Collins, R-Me., calling for the Senate intelligence committee to interview him. The chairman said that he will subpoena the president's son if necessary.
The lawmakers spoke one day after Donald Trump Jr. disclosed on Twitter a series of emails that revealed his eagerness to hear negative material on Clinton from a Russian lawyer.
"It is unclear how she was still in the country for that meeting, despite being denied a visa beforehand and her parole purportedly expiring on January 7, 2016", Grassley wrote, according to a statement and copy of the letter released Wednesday.
"I think many people would have held that meeting", Trump told Reuters.
Trump Jr. told the intermediary, a music publicist named Rob Goldstone, of the offer: "I love it".
House of Representatives Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi claimed on Tuesday that the meeting between Trump Jr., Jared Kushner, Manafort and Veselnitskaya is a "grave development" in the investigation of possible collusion between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign.
