NY commuters enter 'summer of hell' with trepidation

A massive two-month fix project will launch Monday at the country's busiest train station.

A New Jersey Transit train got derailed as it entered in NY on Thursday night at Pennsylvania Station, causing another set of delays on all Amtrak trains and New Jersey Transit just days prior to the major repairs begin at the nation's busiest transit hub. That won't happen until a new tunnel is built under the Hudson River, a project that faces lingering questions over how much funding President Donald Trump's administration will provide.

After several recent train derailments, major track repairs at Penn Station are scheduled for the next two months.

Train service reductions and schedule changes will force travelers from New Jersey and Long Island to find alternative routes into the city, including buses, ferries and cars.

As a way for the thousands of affected commuters to avoid the inevitable headaches they will face while the work continues through September 1, MTA Chairman Joe Lhota suggested on Sunday that they "try to come in earlier - or later if your job allows it".

Lex Marshall of Morristown says there's a lot of confusion and too many people gathered in one space.

Two minor derailments and other problems at New York's Penn Station this spring prompted Amtrak to accelerate repairs it had initially planned to perform over a few years.

Service has been stepped up by trains, buses and ferries in anticipation of the busier commute. They'll have to contend with fewer trains during peak periods, the result of track closures in Penn Station.

NJ Transit is diverting some rush hour trains to Hoboken, where passengers can switch to PATH trains or ferries.

The repairs are expected to last through August.

The disruptions will hurt the city's economy, with Manhattan employers expected to lose about $14.5 million for each hour that commuters from New Jersey and Long Island are delayed, according to an estimate by the Partnership for New York City.

The New York City subway system is under a state-of-emergency order.

Commuters are advised to sign up for MTA alerts, buy tickets ahead of time and travel closer to the start or end of rush hour to avoid crowds.
