Panamagate: Pak Supreme Court concludes hearing against Nawaz Sharif

The democracy debate

Head of the Securities and Exchange Commission Zafar Hijazi was accused by investigators of doctoring the records of a sugar mill owned by the Sharif family. The order came after the court had reviewed the final report submitted by the JIT, which was earlier kept secret on the probe panel's request, The News International reported.

The three-member bench also heard the arguments of Finance Minister Ishaq Dar's counsel as well as the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) prosecutor general today.

Marriyum said that the Sharif family submitted two more documents in the court which were duly certified, verified and notarized.

Marriyum said that with the power of the ballot Nawaz Sharif would again have a landslide victory in 2018 elections and the elements involved in hurling baseless allegations at him would have to bite the dust. The arrest comes just over a week after the investigating team, tasked by the SC with probing the graft claims, said that documents naming Sharif's daughter Maryam as a trustee for several of the family's high-end London properties were also "falsified".

The date for announcement of the verdict will be released later.

The controversy surrounding the Sharif family's wealth came under scrutiny a year ago after the publication of 11.5 million secret documents from Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca documenting the offshore dealings of numerous world's rich and powerful. Supreme Court may verify these documents from Dubai if they want to.

However, the report is fueling intense pressure on Sharif from opposition parties to resign.

Consultative meeting of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) that was chaired by Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif has decided that he would not tender his resignation and would wait for top court's judgment in corruption case.

Imran Khan says Sharif's days as prime minster are over and he should go to prison. "Now I am not demanding his resignation, but imprisonment", he told reporters on Thursday.

The prime minister directed that the facilities should be made at par with the major worldwide airports in the world.
