Qatar Airways to launch new service to Ukraine

Why Is Qatar Airways Interested in American Airlines

Qatar Airways said it will go ahead with plans to buy a stake in American Airlines Inc even though the us carrier is ending their code-share agreement.

The existing codeshare deals will end on March 25, 2018.

American said it was ending the relationship as part of its push against the alleged government subsidies of Middle Eastern carriers, which the carriers deny.

Qatar Airways will launch direct flights to the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, starting late next month, Qatar News Agency (QNA) reported yesterday, quoting officials at the Qatari airline.

The decision "is an extension of our stance against illegal subsidies these carriers receive from their governments", it said.

Qatar Airways Group chief executive Akbar Al Baker has issued a statement apologising for his recent remarks which compared Qatar Airways cabin crew with cabin crew on United States carriers.

Mr. Al Baker's comments are misogynistic and demeaning, and they are offensive to the hardworking Americans that his subsidized airline is trying to put out of work.

American and Qatar are both members of the Oneworld alliance.

American's decision to end the agreements which allow airlines to book passengers on each other's flights, ramps up an acrimonious dispute between US carriers and Gulf competitors over competitive advantages.

The US company privately notified Qatar Airways of the decision on June 29 - a week after disclosing that the Middle East airline's overture to potentially become one of American Airline's largest shareholders.

A stake in American would add to Qatar Airways' investment portfolio, which already includes a 20% stake in British Airways-owner International Airlines Group and 10% of South America's LATAM Airlines. Etihad accused American for being anti competitive and anti consumer and was very disappointed with this decision.

Codeshares allow American to sell tickets on board flights operated by another airline using an AA flight number.

American Airlines said it would also end a marketing agreement with Etihad Airways PJSC.

All three Gulf carriers operate flights out of Dallas-Fort Worth Airport.
