US Navy Fires Warning Shots Toward Iranian Ship During 'Tense Encounter'

Shell is willing to ship fuel from Iran and sell it at airports in the Persian Gulf littoral states and neighboring countries

The US navy has fired warning shots at an Iranian vessel when it brushed within 150 yards of them in the Gulf.

CNN also reports that the Iranians did not respond to warning shots, radio calls, "firing of flares and five short blasts from the US Navy ship's whistle, which is the internationally recognized communications signal for danger".

The USS Thunderbolt fired shots from.50-caliber machine gun, according to Fox News.

The incident came as several Navy ships in the area were conducting routine patrol operations. "After the warning shots were fired, the Iranian vessel halted its unsafe approach".

In June, the United States military labeled the actions of an Iranian vessel "unsafe and unprofessional" after it trained a laser on a United States helicopter that was accompanying a formation of American ships transiting the global waters of the Strait of Hormuz. The Iranian ship came within 1,100 yards of the USS Mahan, closing the distance even after the US ship maneuvered to open the distance.

Tense naval encounters are not uncommon between Iranian and U.S. forces in the Gulf: Ten U.S. sailors were detained by the Iranian military in January 2016.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps is a paramilitary force that answers directly to the Islamic republic's supreme leader.

While campaigning for the presidency in September, President Donald Trump warned that any Iranian vessels that harass the U.S. Navy in the Arabian Gulf would be "shot out of the water".

In January 2016, the Iranians briefly captured the crew of two small USA patrol boats that strayed into Iranian waters.

The IRGC called blamed the US for the "provocative and unprofessional" incident in a statement carried by Iranian state owned Press TV.
