Andy Murray Withdraws From US Open

Marin Cilic

NY [U.S.A.] August 27: Andy Murray has pulled out of the US Open because of the right hip injury. I tried resting, rehabbing, to try and get myself ready here. "But it's too sore for me to win the tournament and ultimately that's what I was here to try and do".

Murray's withdrawal means a reshuffling of the men's draw, with fifth seed Marin Cilic taking over the number two slot and an opening match against American Tennys Sandgren.

Murray has not played since Wimbledon, when he was hampered by the hip injury as he lost to Sam Querrey in the quarter-finals.

"I'll sit down and decide with my team in the next couple of days, for sure".

"It's obviously Roger and Rafa are the biggest favorites still".

The 30-year-old must now decide what to do moving forward and whether to follow Novak Djokovic, Stan Wawrinka and Kei Nishikori, who have all brought their seasons to an early end because of injury.

"I was actually practising OK the last few days".

The Briton has joined the likes of Stan Wawrinka, Novak Djokovic and Kei Nishikori in withdrawing from the last grand slam of the season, making it three of the four semi-finalists from previous year at Flushing Meadow now out of the tournament.

Kathleen Stroia, the WTA's Senior Vice President of Sport Sciences & Medicine and Transitions, said the schedule's setup helps players limit changes in court surfaces but they must still plan accordingly for the transitions.

Add in 2016 Wimbledon runner-up Milos Raonic, who has a problem with his left wrist, and Murray, and now five of the top 11 men in this week's ATP rankings will be absent.

Many players spend their only month "off" over Christmas in grueling training for next year.

If Murray had pulled out of the field anytime before the draw was conducted Thursday, then Federer would have moved up to the No. 2 seeding and automatically would be in the bottom half of the bracket, setting up the possibility of a final between him and Nadal. And Roger Federer, who is still entered, is dealing with a bad back.

Drysdale says: 'Managing your year and how much you play is a huge thing. It's not as simple as just inserting a lucky loser into the draw where Murray's name was, which is what would happen in a smaller event.
