Astros: Tropicana Field will be home away from home

Hurricane Harvey

Tropicana Field, home of the Tampa Bay Rays has become a neutral home site for the Houston Astros as Major League Baseball has relocated their three-game series against the Texas Rangers beginning on Tuesday due to the extreme flooding in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.

Astros players and fans expressed their appreciation Tuesday night for Tampa Bay's willingness to host this week's series against the Texas Rangers.

With Houston now dealing with devastating flooding from Hurricane Harvey, the Astros had proposed playing this week's series in Arlington and moving the September 25-27 series, which is scheduled to be played in Texas, to Houston.

The Rangers didn't want to play all those road games at season's end, and the Astros likely will be away from home 19 straight games, including this weekend's series against the Mets that had been scheduled for Houston.

Despite a published report that indicated a decision on the Mets series was final, Ryan stopped short of announcing the Astros' plans past the Rangers series.

The Rangers announced the organization will donate the proceeds from its Texas 2 Split 50/50 Raffle to the American Red Cross from all three games of the upcoming home series with the Angels on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Including their series last weekend in Anaheim, Calif., they will have played 19 consecutive games away from Houston before their next game at Minute Maid Park on September 15. "Greed never takes off days, apparently", Houston Astros starting pitcher Lance McCullers Jr. said after the Rangers refused to swap home series with the Astros. Maybe the Houston Astros will be the team to fill that role in 2017. "We had to look at our players' best interest and we had to look at the integrity of the schedule". The AL West leaders thought they were leaving for a three-game road trip, but it's quickly turned into an 18-game, 21-day road venture.

Tropical Storm Harvey has wreaked havoc on Houston with massive flooding leaving much of the city underwater, as relief efforts continue far and wide.

Instead of playing their upcoming homestand in Houston, baseball's Houston Astros chose to move their upcoming series to Florida as parts of the Houston area are flooded. This is all the revenue - from ticket sales all the way down to parking.

Both teams flew to Dallas-Fort Worth after their respective series in California to await a decision. The Astros are designated as the home team. The Rangers are three games back from a wild card spot. The Orioles played three games in St. Petersburg as the home team.

Hurricane Harvey and the catastrophic flooding that resulted from it has devastated the Houston area. The jumbo screen featured Astros team videos from Minute Maid Park.
