First comments from Uber's new CEO

Uber confirms Expedia chief Dara Khosrowshahi as next chief

He was offered the CEO position at Uber late Sunday night after the company's board voted to choose him over the weekend; he has yet to accept the job, we're told.

"Casting a vote for the next chief executive of Uber was a big moment for me and I couldn't be happier pass the torch to such an inspiring leader", said Travis Kalanick, who stepped down as Uber CEO in June after investors demanded his resignation.

Iranian-born Khosrowshahi, 48, will take on the daunting task of mending Uber's image, repairing frayed relations among investors, rebuilding employee morale and creating a profitable business after seven years of losses. "I've been here at Expedia for so long that I've forgotten what life is like outside this place", wrote Khosrowshahi.

Benchmark responded a week later, excoriating Mr. Kalanick's motion as a "facile response" that did "not dispute the overwhelming factual basis for Benchmark 's allegations".

With Uber, Khosrowshahi inherits an embattled company rocked by months of scandal involving alleged sexual harassment in the workplace and questionable workplace practices.

Uber has also faced an executive exodus this year.

He is described as being a "calming influence" at Expedia, which is exactly what Uber would appear to need right now as it faces up to litigation from Google parent Alphabet over its alleged theft of self-driving auto intelligence, and continuing accusations of spying on customers, not to mention sexism and poor conditions for drivers. "Chairman Jeffrey Immelt were known to be in the running for the job". He joined from Expedia which, according to a statement from Uber's board, "he built into one of the world's leading travel and technology companies". He grew up in Tarrytown, N.Y., trained as an engineer at Brown, and spent many years at IAC serving as Chief Financial Officer and in various operational and strategic roles. "I'm fully confident that Expedia leadership will take us home". This may mean that he has started looking for a new role which makes him a potential candidate.

The ban was lifted early after the company paid a penalty of 190 million Philippine pesos (£2.88m; $3.72m). In Huffington's last foray in front of Uber's troops, she was on the receiving end of an ill-timed sexist joke from TPG's David Bonderman about women talking too much.

The judge on Wednesday granted former CEO Travis Kalanick's request to put the lawsuit on hold while an arbitrator considers claims raised by venture capital firm Benchmark Capital Partners against the ride-hailing company. "I think he's a phenomenal leader; Uber is ridiculously interesting".
