Israel's Netanyahu 'wouldn't have to resign' if indicted on corruption charges

Israeli PM Netanyahu downplays ex-aide's decision to testify in graft cases

Some 3,000 demonstrators gathered on Saturday night near the home of Israel's Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit, to protest what they view as slow progress in the multiple corruption cases against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

A former top aide to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will testify on behalf of state prosecutors in two graft cases in which the Israeli prime minister has been questioned as a suspect, a Justice Ministry source said on Friday.

Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu is not only fighting against possible legal charges, but also against public opinion.

Shaked is the most high-profile official to respond to news that Israeli police suspect Netanyahu of being involved in bribery, fraud and breach of trust in a pair of cases.

Harow, Netanyahu's chief of staff from 2014 to 2015, had been under investigation for allegations that he used political connections to advance his business interests. Netanyahu reportedly asked Mozes for more favorable coverage.

"Case 2000" focuses on Netanyahu's conversations with Yedioth Ahronoth publisher Arnon Mozes, in which they allegedly discussed a deal to have the Israeli newspaper soften its stance on Netanyahu in exchange for curtailing the activities of Israel Hayom, a competing news outlet.

If Harow gives evidence against his former boss, it would increase the chances of Netanyahu facing charges.

Police have been questioning Netanyahu for months over the cases, but have released few details.

The U.S. -born Harrow has been under investigation for the past 2 years for fraud and other crimes regarding the sale of his consulting company while working as chief of staff, media reports.

Netanyahu has denied wrongdoing, calling the allegations a witch hunt. "We can not go without a "weekly affair", so I want to tell you, citizens of Israel, I'm not referring to the background noise, I'm continuing to work for you", Netanyahu said in a video published on his Facebook page last Friday. Baklava is his achilles heel.
