Jaguars' Doug Marrone Officially Opens QB Competition

But team-mate Telvin Smith insists the Jacksonville Jaguars have faith in Bortles

Starting Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles, already on thin ice with first-year coach Doug Marrone, struggled badly Thursday night against Tampa Bay in a nationally televised preseason game.

The 25-year-old Bortles, the third overall pick in 2014 and the Jaguars' starter since Week 4 of his rookie season, was ineffective in his four series in the first half against the Bucs, all of which ended in punts.

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles is in danger of losing his starting job, when a competition was once unthinkable.

"I'm looking for someone that's going to lead this offense", Doug Marrone said.

"We were very stagnant as an offense", Bortles said.

"Well, I think you've got to take that into consideration, again, is he in consideration?" "It felt real good to get into the end zone", said Martin.

Jason Myers missed a field goal and an extra point.

Meanwhile, Tampa Bay's kicking woes continued as Nick Folk, the presumed victor of the kicking battle against recently released Roberto Aguayo, had his extra point attempt blocked and later missed a 47-yard field goal to finish 2-3 on field goal attempts.

The disgruntled fan called into the Jaguars' flagship radio station at 1:48 a.m. Friday with a succinct bit of analysis.

After an unimpressive showing in Week 2 of the National Football League preseason, the Jacksonville Jaguars announced that the quarterback job is up for grabs. However, rookie receiver Dede Westbrook lit up the Bucs' reserves in the fourth quarter, catching six passes for 131 yards.

We wrote earlier this week that the Jaguars might regret passing on Clemson QB Deshaun Watson (and the same perhaps could be said for Texas Tech's Patrick Mahomes), and the fear from which that story was written has morphed into full-fledged disappointment and frustration following a bad performa. Drafting one of the players in a quarterback-rich draft in 2018 isn't an option. "But we have extremely high standards for him as he does for himself". He might have been the top quarterback on the board, but he wasn't among the top ten players on anybody's draft board. "Elite quarterbacks don't make that play".

Jacksonville: Running back T.J. Yeldon injured his left hamstring and did not return. Other starters who missed the game: Ramsey, Bouye and CB Aaron Colvin (still on the physically unable to perform list). Cornerback Charles Gaines injured his right eye.
