Kenya Opposition Coalition Will 'Not Be Party' To Polls Announcement

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta was on Friday declared the victor of Tuesday's presidential elections with 8.20 million (54.27 percent) votes against 6.76 million (44.74 percent) for his main challenger, Raila Odinga after a tense electoral process which was preceded by an opposition walkout.

The official results show Kenyatta achieving re-election comfortably, with a lead of more than 1.4 million votes over his principal challenger, Raila Odinga.

The constitution gives the electoral commission seven days to announce results; in 2022, it may be wise to resist the pressure for news and declare only those results which can be backed up by a publically available, online copy of form 34A.

Global observers including the African Union said the election was free and fair and called on disputes to be resolved through the courts.

A resident of Nairobi's Kawangware slum said police fired tear gas at dozens of Odinga supporters throwing stones on Thursday.

Chiloba says the commission chairman, Wafula Chebukati, will make an announcement later in the day.

The dispute has raised fears among Kenyans of ethnic and political clashes of the kind seen in 2007, when 1,200 people were killed.

Hours after voting ended, Raila called a press conference saying that the IEBC system had been hacked and Presidential results compromised.

"We are exhausted of being ruled by Kikuyus", said Wycliffe Onyalo, 25, referring to Kenyatta's tribe, which has dominated politics since Kenya's independence from Britain in 1963.

The Chairperson of the AU Commission visited Kenya ahead of the polls on July 18-20 this year, during which he called for peaceful and credible elections before, during and after the elections, recalled the statement.

"Nobody should think this is the end of the matter", he said. He also lost the 2013 vote to Kenyatta and took allegations of vote-tampering to the Supreme Court, which rejected his case.

Odinga and the opposition National Super Alliance (NASA) have said they would only accept the results if allowed to access the election commission's servers to audit raw data from the country's 41,000 polling stations.

Bystanders watch as Kenyan police trucks arrive following a protest at Nairobi's Mathare slum on August 11.

Observers see the election as the last showdown of a dynastic rivalry between the families of Kenyatta, 55, and Odinga that has lasted more than half a century.

Orengo said they would not seek redress through legal channels again, saying they had tried once and failed.

Polling stations opened at 6am and closed at 5pm but many were in the queues as early as 2am.

Violence broke out this week in some opposition strongholds in parts of the capital, Nairobi, and elsewhere. At least three people were killed.

"We have urged people to remain calm as we delve deeper into this matter".

Protracted turmoil could derail an economy that's grown an average of 5.7 percent a year since Kenyatta took power in 2013, and threaten its reputation as a top African investment and tourist destination.
