Knife attack injures 8 in Russian Federation, assailant killed by police

Eight people injured following knife attack in Russia

Russia's Investigations Committee have said they launched a probe into the horror that unfolded about 11.20am local time - with ISIS since having claimed that it was responsible for the attack. It is believed that the man suffered from psychiatric problems.

Today, eight people were stabbed by an armed man in Russian Federation.

Initial reports that said that eight people had been wounded have been lowered to seven, with two people confirmed to be in a serious condition. The man then left the store and attacked pedestrians outside, the posts said.

Investigators have opened a criminal inquiry into attempted murder, not terrorism, with the Investigative Committee's chief Alexander Bastrykin taking the case under his personal control.

According to the committee, the attacker was killed by security forces, who had immediately arrived at the scene.

The authorities identified the attacker as a Surgut local born in 1994.

At least two people are fighting for their lives, while another five were hospitalised in the stabbing spree, authorities said.

On Saturday, the Islamic State extremist group claimed responsibility for the attack through the group's Amaq News Agency. She said one victim was fighting for his life.

Surgut has a population of around 350,000 and is a major oil and gas hub, 1,300 miles northeast of Moscow.

The mayor of Sourgout, Vadim Shuvalov, has called in a video message to the inhabitants of this city of western Siberia to "keep them quiet", ensuring that the police controlled the situation.
