Man Allegedly Held Woman, Two Children Captive in Home for Years

Explosion at Minneapolis School

A woman and her two children escaped from captivity inside a home in Virginia when deputies were sent to check on their welfare, authorities said.

A friend of the family called authorities and requested they check on their welfare after not hearing from them for some time. A caller was concerned that no one had seen any of the family members for some time.

They told deputies they had been held against their will for more than two years, according to the sheriff's office. Moments later, a woman and two children ran out of the home's side door.

Soon after speaking to Moore, the woman and children came running out the door to the deputies.

Investigators believe the children, ages 8 and 11, have never attended school, Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Lt. Charles A. Carey said.

Kareim Ali Muhammad Moore, 43, has been charged with abduction and felony assault and battery.

The woman, Moore's girlfriend, was hospitalized in serious condition, and the children, who referred to Moore as their father, are staying with relatives, Carey said.

The woman, 32, is being treated at a medical facility.

The sheriff's office said the victims told deputies that they had not been allowed to leave the home for at least two years. He's being held at the Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond. When they told him they were there to check on the family, Moore appeared to become uncomfortable.

"I have never seen that lady or those kids since they moved into that house, and that was before last summer, because the grass was really tall", a neighbor told NBC.

It's unclear if Moore has a lawyer.
