Man Who Suffered Eye Damage from Solar Eclipse Has This Warning

SOLAR ECLIPSE

But if you're preparing to watch the solar eclipse, make sure to buy the right solar eclipse glasses and to follow NASA's safety tips.

"When you partially obscure the sun with the moon, it's not so bright, and it's not so painful to actually look at it", Dr. G. Baker Hubbard of the Emory Eye Center in Atlanta told FOX5.

Louis Tomososki gazed up with the naked eye at a 1963 partial eclipse for just 20 seconds. Tomososki stressed in an interview with KPTV, an NBC affiliate, that it didn't take long for damage to set in.

"I am just so concerned that somebody isn't going to listen", he said.

"Every time we go to an eye doctor now for an exam, they dilate your eyes and look in there, the first thing they say is, you looked at a solar eclipse sometime in your life", Tomasoski said.

"It doesn't get any worse and it doesn't get any better", he said. "But, even though it's not painful, those harmful rays are still getting in your eyes and focused right onto the center of your retina, and that's where it does the damage".

The damage occurs in the fovea, a spot in the retina that is responsible for sharp, central vision.

"There's no sign", he told InsideEdition.com. As a result, patients with solar retinopathy may have blurry vision or a central blind point in their eyes, according to the AAO.

The sun's rays carry many different types of light that can cause physical and chemical damage to your vision.

People with the condition show a characteristic pattern of eye damage during eye exams. "It looks like someone took a hole punch and just punched out the photoreceptive cells in the retina", Van Gelder said.

On Monday you'll get your chance to see a solar eclipse for yourself. In fact, even those who have already bought their eclipse glasses are still warned to check if they are safe and certified.

According to KGW, Tomososki says he will be outside on August 21, but he won't be looking skyward. Van Gelder told TODAY when the disc of the moon covers the sun and corona of the sun is visible, it is safe to look at it.

In Omaha, 98 percent to 99 percent of the sun will be blocked, so viewing must be done with solar glasses or through cameras and telescopes equipped with solar filters, said Krista Testin of the University of Nebraska at Omaha's physics department.
