Mosquitoes with West Nile Virus found in North Branford

New West Nile Virus Case reported in Hinds County

The West Nile Virus season in Santa Clara County is starting slowly this year, but officials warn that's no reason to for residents to relax on the recurring health risk.

The West Nile virus is transmitted to humans by mosquitoes that have bitten infected birds.

Apply mosquito larvicide, sometimes called mosquito "dunks", to areas of standing water that can not be drained. There have not been any human cases in CT this summer.

Mosquitoes carrying the West Nile and La Crosse viruses have been found in Kanawha County.

This is the time when mosquitoes are most active.

The departments of Health and Environmental Protection said the case should serve as a reminder for people to take precautions.

Young children, adults older than 50, and people with compromised immune systems are said to be most vulnerable to contracting the West Nile Virus.

Those who do become sick usually experience symptoms including fever, headache, muscle aches, rash and fatigue. West Nile virus infections in humans have been reported from June through October; however, most reported becoming ill with West Nile virus in August and September. "West Nile was first identified in OH in 2001, so it's not new to our area, but we like to take the opportunity to remind everyone to take precautions".
