Nikki Haley: Iran Nuclear Deal Isn't 'Too Big to Fail'

Iran sees banking channels opening up

Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) on July 14, 2015 reached a conclusion over the text of the comprehensive 159-page deal on Tehran's nuclear program and started implementing it on January 16, 2016.

Haley, in a statement at the UN in NY, said the sanctions imposed by Trump were unrelated to the nuclear deal, under which the United States and other world powers agreed to lift most economic sanctions on Iran, according to RFE/RL.

Lavrov also said he hoped the United States would not violate its obligations under the nuclear deal with Iran.

The deal limited Iran's ability to produce a nuclear weapon, and if complied with, would put an end to most of the #sanctions against it. "The nuclear deal must not become "too big to fail"," Haley said. We warned that new Congressional sanctions would lead to Iran doubling down on its missile program and the Revolutionary Guard, empowering hardline elements while destabilizing the JCPOA.

According to the state broadcaster IRIB, lawmakers overwhelmingly approved the outlines of the bill to "counter America's terrorist and adventurist actions" as some chanted "Death to America".

"The U.S. has shown that it is neither a good partner nor a trustable negotiator", Rouhani added.

Lavrov condemned the new United States sanctions as illegitimate and capable of "undermining and destroying the carefully built balance" reached to curb Iran's nuclear program. "It was Iran's preference, but it was not and will not remain Iran's only option", he added. In response, Western countries agreed to lift sanctions. Tehran considers it a violation of the landmark 2015 nuclear agreement.

The new US sanctions came amid Iran's reported fueling of the recent Temple Mount crisis and its agreement to bolster relations with the Hamas terror group.

"The United States knows that it does not have the possibility of converging with its allies, but the USA is making efforts to change the terms of the JCPOA agreement in its favor by increasing pressure on Iran", he added.

"The full implementation of the nuclear deal benefits the European Union and the region; therefore, it is necessary that the European Union increases its efforts and role in this regard", Rouhani was quoted by the FARS news agency as saying.

"Iran, I think, is very unlikely to withdraw from the deal".

However, how can arguments like this be taken seriously when it is the Iranian regime that is seriously jeopardising the deal by launching ballistic missiles, destabilising numerous countries in the Middle East and spreading fundamentalism and terrorism?

The expert said the U.S. and Iran appeared to be "engaging in a game of brinkmanship".

President Rouhani stressed the need for more Iran-Russia consultations and cooperation toward the settlement of regional issues in Syria, Yemen, and Iraq, particularly in the fight against terrorism.
