North Korea threat prompts Guam natives to assert rights

Trump praises North Korea's Kim Jong Un for backing down on missile threat

It was apparently those changes that led North Korean leader Kim Jong-un to delay a decision on whether he would fire missiles towards Guam, a territory of the U.S. that North Korea has repeatedly threatened to bomb.

In order to resolve the tensions between the DPRK and USA, he insisted that the latter should make "necessary" actions "first" as it committed provocations after introducing huge nuclear strategic equipment into the vicinity of the Korean peninsula, the same report stated.

But amid the threats made by the two provocative leaders, South Korea President Moon Jae-in expressed his hope for a peaceful resolution to the growing tensions, which centre on fears North Korea is close to its aim of being able to send a nuclear missile to the USA mainland following recent tests.

Responding to the tests, Trump warned the North of "fire and fury like the world has never seen", while Pyongyang threatened to fire missiles close to the USA territory of Guam.

We should also bear in mind that in response to an attack on it, North Korea may fire missiles at United States military personnel based in Japan, in South Korea, and in Guam.

He added South Korea would block war by all means.

In an early morning tweet, Trump said: "Kim Jong Un of North Korea made a very wise and well reasoned decision".

U.S. National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster echoed the tenor of Pompeo's remarks, saying the threat posed by North Korea is "coming to a head", but adding in an interview on ABC, "we're not closer to war than a week ago". North Korea will first observe the United States and its moves before a judgement is made.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said on Tuesday that Washington remains "interested" in engaging in dialogue with North Korea, but he warned that this depends on whether that country's leader, Kim Jong-un, will create the conditions for that to occur.

"A resolution of the North Korea nuclear issue by military force is completely unacceptable and the peninsula's nuclear issue must be peacefully resolved by political and diplomatic methods", Lavrov was quoted as saying.

The U.S. territory is a small island about 3,200 kilometers (2,000 miles) from Pyongyang.

Basically, North Korea wanted to demonstrate the intercontinental reach of the Hwasong-14, but could not safely do so by firing it at another country.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in, meanwhile, a liberal who favours diplomacy, urged North Korea to stop provocations and to commit to talks over its nuclear weapons program. "We're taking all possible actions short of military action, to resolve this very grave threat to the United States and the world".

The DPRK stands for North Korea's official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

But he pointed out previous presidents had also used strong words to warn off Pyongyang, including Barack Obama who said past year that "we could, obviously, destroy North Korea with our arsenals".

The United States and South Korea will launch a large, 10-day joint military exercise this month, but that should not be construed as a signal to North Korea.

Mr Kim is shown sitting with other generals including Kim Jong Sik, a veteran rocket scientist behind North Korea's missile programme, in a war room where other maps of operational zones in South Korea and Japan are hanging on a wall.

The Trump administration had no immediate comments on Kim's declaration.

So instead, North Korea shot the missile almost straight up in the air, and the missile landed just a few hundred miles away in the ocean near Japan.

South Korean Vice Defence Minister Suh Choo-suk highlighted doubts about North Korea's claims about its military capability.

A foreign ministry spokesman for the North on Tuesday denied the country is now discussing the detainees with Washington.
