NWS issues excessive heat warning as heat wave ramps up

Excessive Heat Warning as Southern California Temperatures Spike

The general rule of thumb for this Advisory is when the maximum heat index temperature is expected to be 100° or higher for at least 2 days, and night time air temperatures will not drop below 75°; however, these criteria vary across the country, especially for areas that are not used to risky heat conditions.

The National Weather Service recommends those who work or spend time outside take extra precautions.

Prolonged exposure to high temperatures increases the risk of getting a heat-related illness.

Temperatures will continue to climb throughout San Diego County as a heat advisory goes into effect today.

Temperatures are expected to climb even further as the week progresses, with highs of over 100 predicted for some inland areas. The Center For Disease Control notes, "Older adults, the very young, and people with mental illness and chronic diseases are at highest risk" for heat-related illnesses but that anyone can be affected when triple digit temperatures rear their heads. Highs in desert areas were expected to remain above 110 for much of the week.

The heat wave comes just days after many San Diego County cities saw record low temperatures during a week that was unseasonably cool and cloudy.

A grueling, scorching heat wave is expected to grip the county at least throughout the week, with highs of 108 and 107 expected Monday and Tuesday, respectively.

Alpine also set a new record low of 76 degrees on Thursday, while both Vista and Ramona both tied their previous records for the day.

All other Inland Valleys will reach temperatures between 95-105 degrees.
