Dr Ruth Pfau ” Pakistani Mother Teresa” has passed away

Dr Pfau first visited Pakistan in 1960 and was so touched by the plight of leprosy victims that she chose to stay forever in the country to treat them.

Dr Pfau, 87, who was suffering from complications related to old age, had been admitted to the Aga Khan Hospital two weeks ago where her condition was pronounced unstable.

Pfau had dedicated more than 50 years of her life to fighting leprosy in Pakistan, which earned her the name "Light to the Lepers".

In 1996, the World Health Organization declared that leprosy had been controlled in Pakistan, which led Pfau to the more challenging task of eliminating the disease.

Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi said Pfau "may have been born in Germany, but her heart was always in Pakistan".

Not required to take the veil or live in seclusion, she ended up in Pakistan by chance. In the following couple of years, the Marie Adelaide Leprosy Center opened more branches in every other area of the nation, additionally in Gilgit-Baltistan.

Pfau served as an adviser to the Pakistani government for the eradication of leprosy between 1975 and 1980.

She was awarded the Hilal-e-Imtiaz - Pakistan's second highest civilian award - in 1979, the Hilal-e-Pakistan in 1989. And she ultimately came to enjoy a celebrity in Pakistan on par with another nun known the world over for her work with the sick and the poor: Mother Teresa.

Tributes are pouring in for a German nun who spent more than half a century in Pakistan battling leprosy and helping the country's most vulnerable people. She was likewise granted with the Staufer Medal. She didn't confine her endeavors to treating leprosy patients but at the same time was of colossal help when Sindh confronted serious flooding.
