San Francisco braces for upcoming Patriot Prayer rally

With all-hands-on-deck police action, Calif. cities prepare for rallies

But Patriot Prayer founder Joey Gibson said in a video message posted on the group's Facebook page that it was "absolutely not" white supremacist.

Now they are back for a weekend of provocations on Saturday, August 26 in San Francisco and Sunday, August 27 in Berkeley.

The Patriot Prayer group will hold a "free speech" rally Saturday at Crissy Field, and the Guardian reports on an idea thought up by 45-year-old artist Tuffy Tuffington: to blanket the park with dog excrement.

The Saturday event is billed as a "free speech" rally, but critics say the Oregon-based organizers, Patriot Prayer, is a white nationalist group, pointing to plans that may include the far-right Oath Keepers providing armed security.

The San Francisco event is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. Saturday at Crissy Field, a federal park along the San Francisco Bay.

There will be fences and a large physical separation between protesters and event supporters to prevent violence, and those attending will be searched, Gibson said.

Dog walkers are planning to protest a politically conservative free-speech rally by leaving pup poop at San Francisco's Crissy Field.

People held signs that read "Unite Against Hate" and cheered religious and elected officials who took the microphone to speak of love and champion diversity in a city that famously prides itself as a sanctuary for gays, minorities and people who are in the country illegally. He acknowledges that individuals with extreme views have been attracted to his events in the past and that part of the intention of hosting an event in San Francisco is to show how "extremely intolerant" such liberal cities can be.

"We can not deny a permit to anyone planning to exercise their First Amendment rights based on their political stance or beliefs", the statement said.

Though they began as pro-Trump rallies, Gibson says he's left issues of "who you vote for" behind and is now focused on the belief that the First Amendment is being threatened by people who are intolerant of any viewpoints that don't match their own, on the left and the right.

Transit officials said for the event on Saturday at Civic Center Plaza, drivers will not be able to park around the streets near the plaza, and will have police officers and SFMTA staff to direct traffic.

Violence broke out in Charlottesville, Virginia on August 12, when white supremacists clashed with counter-protesters.

Another event on Facebook calls to protest the Patriot Prayer rally with flowers.

Berkeley city officials passed a temporary rule to give police more power to ban weapons.

Mayor Jesse Arreguin said this week he is exhausted of his city being targeted by people who show up in military wear and support positions that he calls anti-immigrant, anti-Muslim, and anti-gay. "What we don't stand for is violence, what we don't stand for is vandalism and we don't stand for thuggery", he said. Another right-wing rally planned for Sunday in Berkeley is expected to draw additional crowds from both sides.
