Should emergency shelters be required to take in people, their pets?

Rescue Village's partner shelters are working to prepare animals for transport and are unsure how long it will take them to arrive.

If the Atlanta shelter fills up, it will ship some of its animals north to states unaffected by the hurricane in order to keep providing aid to animals in need.

PETA has been busy warning families in the affected areas about the storm, encouraging them to take their animals indoors and not leave them behind in the event of an evacuation.

St. Hubert's Animal Welfare Center, a nonprofit shelter based in Madison, is working with shelters in Texas to coordinate the arrival of at least 100 dogs from San Antonio to allow room for other dogs that have been displaced by the hurricane.

"That way they can have space for animals that are being found in their rescue efforts", says Alyssa Eller, of Brother Wolf Animal Rescue. During hurricane Katrina almost 250,000 dogs and cats were displaced or died and some refused to evacuate for fear of abandoning pets.

From firefighters performing water rescues to volunteers serving meals, dozens of Coloradans are now in Texas helping the survivors of Hurricane Harvey.

"I've heard the federal [rescue] is not taking the pets, but the local people with pets are taking the dogs and even going back for the dogs", she said of local volunteers.

What would you save from your home if a natural disaster were to strike?

Contact local shelters to see what they need.

Pets often get lost during weather emergencies, and a simple microchip is one way to ensure that your pet can be identified and returned to you. The organization says the best thing to do right now is donate money to animal groups, in Houston.
