Two police officers were shot while responding to a shooting in New Haven, Conn., on Saturday morning, prompting a four-hour armed standoff with the suspect, law enforcement officials said.

Experts say the two officers are required to be OK.

Neither of the officers or man wounded have been identified. One of the officers then fired at least one round at the man.

Two patrol officers-Eric Pessino and Scott Shumway-responded to 911 calls related to the incident and were shot by Monroe inside the Elm Street apartment.

A second officer assisting at the scene was also struck, in his lower torso, authorities said. She was rushed to Yale-New Haven Hospital but where she is undergoing surgery and in critical condition.

The investigation is now in the hands of the Connecticut State Police and the State Attorney, as is the protocol for an officer-involved shooting.

According to Warren, the man continued to approach the officer, who deployed his taser.

Sheriff's investigators didn't say whether or not they had found a gun at the scene. At some point, the man then reached toward the back of his waistband and made a "threatening statement", which caused the officer to believe the man was arming himself, authorities said. The officer was wearing a protective vest and their injuries are not considered life-threatening. His condition isn't known.
