At least 5 dead as magnitude-8.1 natural disaster rocks southern Mexico

People ran out of their homes when the earthquake struck

At least 58 people were killed Friday, when a powerful 8.2-magnitude quake struck southern Mexico, authorities said.

The tsunami warning was for the coasts of Mexico, down through Central America into Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama and Honduras, and as far south as Ecuador.

A magnitude-8.4 natural disaster off Mexico's southern coast is the strongest to hit the country in 100 years, President Enrique Peña Nieto has said, writes The Independent.

According to BuzzFeed News, residents in Mexico City, more than 650 miles away from the earthquake's epicenter, fled their buildings, barefoot and in robes.

According to Mexico's President Enrique Pena Nieto, this was the strongest quake to hit the country in 100 years with violent tremors leaving Mexican homes and buildings in ruins, and thousands seeking safety.

Mr Pena Nieto said on Friday evening in a televised address that at least 61 people were killed - 45 in Oaxaca state, 12 in Chiapas and 4 in Tabasco - and he declared three days of national mourning.

The USGS reported multiple aftershocks, including at least six measuring above a 5.0 in magnitude. The U.S. Geological Survey measured it at 8.1 magnitude.

Experts opined that the death toll was lesser as the quake struck less populated cities. Nieto said the quake was the strongest Mexico had experienced in a century, and was felt by 50 million of the country's 120 million citizens.

The southern town of Juchitan in Oaxaca state, which is near the epicentre, was hit very hard.

Waves as high as 9.8 feet above tide level were possible along some of Mexico's coast.

At least three children are reported among the dead, including a baby who died after his life support machine lost power when a hospital suffered a power outage.

Emergency services are assisting with the rescues of people in collapsed buildings.
