BRICS Summit begins in China, Modi-Xi likely to meet

Defense Minister Song Young-moo speaks during a parliamentary session at the National Assembly in Seoul on Sept. 4 2017

The upcoming BRICS summit will derive the way forward for practical and comprehensive cooperation between member countries and other emerging economies, the organizing committee said on Saturday.

According to Egypt's Presidency, el-Sisi will hold meetings with senior Vietnamese officials to discuss bilateral relations and ways to bolster them in various fields.

The meeting of bank representatives took place on Friday ahead of the BRICS leaders summit scheduled for September 3-5 at Xiamen in China.

Issues like counter-terrorism and the global financial crisis will also come for up discussion. Tragically, the mother-ship of terrorism is a country in India's neighbourhood.

Modi might raise Pakistan's terror links at the event. "We are very much interested in partnership with India. The worldwide community should recognise their contributions and sacrifices made by Pakistan".

China routinely refers to "sacrifices" made by Pakistan in battling terrorism.

She added, "China is willing to work with Pakistan and other countries to enhance our cooperation in counterterrorism". This is an illustration of the potential of multilateralism, which has been defined by John Ruggie as based on "generalised principles of conduct" for the whole group "without regard to particularistic interests of the parties or strategic exigencies".

"Modi goes to China with an enhanced stature and stronger leadership credentials than Xi", said Mohan Malik, a professor at the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies at Honolulu in the United States to TOI. The visit assumes significance as it comes after 73-day standoff in Dokalam.

The BRICS business forum is expected to gather a record 1,200 participants, including representatives from almost 80 Fortune 500 multinationals, said Jiang Zengwei, head of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, at a press conference. The theme of this BRICS Summit is "Stronger Partnership for a Brighter Future".

After the BRICS Summit, Modi will travel to Myanmar.

The NDB Board of Directors approved four infrastructure and sustainable development projects in China, India and Russian Federation on Wednesday, with loans aggregating over US$1.4 billion.
