Clemson Defense Pounces on Auburn

Auburn at Clemson

Kelly Bryant: That 27-yard keeper early in the second half for a touchdown was - dare we say it - a bit Deshaun Watson-like from Clemson's new starting quarterback.

Auburn and Clemson are both known for their high-powered offenses, but defenses ruled the day in tonight's showdown - and Clemson's emerged victorious.

Defense steps up for No. 3 Clemson vs. He completed 14 of 24 passes for 185 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception - not bad numbers, but nothing to crow about against 2016's No. 68-ranked pass defense. Clemson finished with 14 tackles for loss and 11 sacks. Defensively, Clemson football yields 3.0 points and 120.0 total yards, 1.0 in passing and 119.0 in rushing.

In five games between them since 2007, Clemson has won three and Auburn has won two, with two of those games decided in overtime, two tied in the third quarter and last year's contest at Auburn decided only on the final play, when a Hail Mary pass was batted down and Clemson won 19-13.

Plus, they were backed by a top-15 defense that allowed 322 yards per game.

The Tigers had 11 sacks with Austin Bryant leading the way with four.

Auburn got off to a strong start and controlled the game for much of the first half, but Auburn settled for field goals over touchdowns early - something it could ill afford to do against the defending national champions. Even after a punt return gave Auburn yet another chance late in the fourth quarter of a one-score game, three more sacks on consecutive snaps ended the threat.

While the defensive front got credit for the sacks, several of them were coverage sacks. His second completion of the game went for 23 yards. "We're going to regroup and we're going to be a lot better". We didn't protect the quarterback when we needed to and we weren't able to effectively run the football.

Ray-Ray McCloud: Deon Cain and Hunter Renfrow draw more attention at wide receiver, but McCloud was so solid Saturday as a pass-catcher.

Auburn gave the defending champions a hard time in last season's 19-13 loss at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Auburn PK Daniel Carlson is the school's all-time scoring leader with 371 points and holds 12 Auburn kicking records.

According to the ESPN broadcast Saturday night, it only took two weeks of action for Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn to assume play-calling duties again.
