Cuba Signs Nuclear Weapons Ban Treaty at UN

Activists wearing masks to look like US President Donald Trump and North Korean Kim Jong Un pose next to a Styrofoam effigy of a nuclear bomb while protesting in front of the Brandenburg Gate near the American Embassy

The Caribbean nation ratified its commitment to free the human species from the danger the existence of 15,000 of these weapons of mass extermination, some 1,800 of them ready for use, now represents.

She said the tensions on the Korean Peninsula demonstrated the urgency of the need to ban nuclear weapons.

Scores of police were soon on the scene but did not appear to be intent on brining the protest to a quick end.

The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, or the Nuclear Weapon Ban Treaty, is the first legally binding global agreement to comprehensively prohibit nuclear weapons, with the goal of leading towards their total elimination.

After the treaty was adopted in July, a joint statement from the United States, United Kingdom and France said the countries "do not intend to sign, ratify or ever become party to [the treaty]".

His speech came a day after Trump, in his own address to the assembly, called the U.N. -backed Iran nuclear deal "an embarrassment" to the United States.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres opened a signing ceremony on Wednesday for a ban on developing, testing, manufacturing, purchasing or possessing nuclear weapons.

The Treaty will enter into force 90 days after it has been ratified by at least 50 countries.

More than 120 countries approved the new nuclear weapons ban treaty in July over opposition from nuclear-armed countries and their allies, who boycotted negotiations.

Supporters of the pact, however, say the time has come for the worldwide community to push harder toward eliminating atomic weapons as a 50-year-old Non-Proliferation Treaty has effectively failed to contain the thirst of powers for expanding their nuclear arsenal.

"We call upon them to join this date with history", he said. "As long as nuclear weapons exist, North Atlantic Treaty Organisation will remain a nuclear alliance", the press release said. American President Donald Trump told the 193-member UN General Assembly on Tuesday that if threatened, the U.S. would "totally destroy" the country of 26 million people and mocked its leader, Kim Jong Un, as a "rocket man".

"The ban treaty is at odds with the existing non-proliferation and disarmament architecture. But we need to do more to get the whole way there".
