DirecTV allowing refunds for National Football League package

DirecTV allowing NFL refunds around player protests

Satellite service DirecTV is refunding NFL Sunday Ticket subscriptions for customers offended by the weekend's national anthem protests. According to Darren Rovell of ESPN, DirecTV is offering refunds on the $280 package that allows fans to watch any out-of-market game throughout the regular season. Ordinarily, you can not get a refund for the service once the season starts.

DirecTV is allowing at least some customers to cancel subscriptions to its Sunday Ticket package of NFL games and obtain refunds, if they cite players' national anthem protests as the reason for discontinuing service, customer service representatives said Tuesday. AT&T itself has not confirmed the news.

Some Twitter users on Wednesday praised DirecTV's move, while others criticized the exemption, which was first reported by The Wall Street Journal.

Purchasers of the NFL Sunday Ticket package typically can't get refunds.

"Wouldn't you love to see one of these National Football League owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, you'd say, 'Get that son of a b**ch off the field right now. Out!"

In a speech last week, President Donald Trump said players who protest should be fired.

In response, entire teams staged protests, including three that stayed in their locker rooms during the anthem.

"For people to disrespect that by kneeling during the playing of our national anthem, I think is disgraceful", Trump said on Tuesday.

Former San Francisco 49er quarterback Colin Kaepernick began the protests when he chose not to stand during the anthem previous year. The NFL has so far been supportive of players' right to express their opinions, but it's unclear whether they'll maintain that position once it starts affecting the sport's revenue.
