How Sinai Province's persistent attempts to penetrate Cairo have failed

At least 18 Egyptian policemen killed in blast in Sinai Islamic State claims responsibility

North Sinai has been caught in a crossfire between Egypt's security forces and militants since the ouster of the former Islamist President Mohamed Morsi.

Three policemen were injured after one suspected militant detonated an explosive device to block their entry into the building and two other policemen were injured during the exchange of fire that followed.

Once limiting their operations to North Sinai, the terrorist groups have recently started to carry out terrorist attacks in different governorates in Egypt including Cairo the capital.

Meanwhile, the forces also engaged in a shootout at a separate apartment with another two militants.

Sunday's raid was not the first of its type - several IS members who have received military training in North Sinai began moving to Cairo for the sake of preparing and implementing attacks. That was the deadliest attack in two years.

Ahram reported earlier that nine policemen died in the attack.

Nine suspected terrorists have been killed in a shootout in Egypt's third largest city Giza, home to the legendary Great Pyramids and the Sphinx.

In June, security forces arrested four people from an apartment located in Giza's suburb of Agouza over charges of forming a cell affiliated to IS.

Private newspaper al-Masry al-Youm, citing security sources, reported that the slain extremists were from the self-styled Hasm group, which authorities accuse of being the armed wing of the now-outlawed Muslim Brotherhood.

Terror attacks in Egypt used to focus on police and military men in North Sinai before spreading nationwide and targeting the Coptic minority as well, with majority claimed by a Sinai-based group loyal to the regional Islamic State (IS) militant group.

Since its emergence in 2013, Velayat Sinai has killed hundreds of members of Egyptian security forces.
