Mumbai rains 2017 Part 2 - Mumbai Airport shut, Trains cancelled, Schools closed

LIVE | Mumbai braces for heavy rainfall; waterlogging halts road, rail traffic; 56 flights diverted

The Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) was the worst hit in the rains after a SpiceJet aircraft SG 703 (Varanasi-Mumbai) overshot the runway on landing and got stuck in mud. The city experienced heavy rains and thunder on Tuesday disrupting local trains and traffic.

Heavy rains lashed Mumbai on Tuesday afternoon, and the meteorological department claimed the wet weather will continue for the next 24 hours.

Maharashtra Education Minister Vinod Tawde posted a series of tweets saying that schools and colleges have been asked to remain closed as a precautionary measure.

Mumbai is regularly deluged by rain between June and September.

Mumbai city recorded 210 mm rainfall, suburb recorded 303 mm rainfall & Dahanu near Mumbai recorded 304 mm rainfall so far. As an emergency was declared and flight operations to and from Mumbai came to a halt, passengers were evacuated using the escape slides and had to spend about 10 minutes next to the stranded aircraft before an airport coach arrived and took them to the terminal building.

Lack of runway availability and predictions of heavy showers in the next 24 hours by the IMD has impacted operations of airlines like IndiGo, SpiceJet and Jet Airways. "The disabled aircraft recovery kit from Air India is at site and preparation of pavement underneath the aircraft is in progress", a Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) spokesperson was quoted as saying by PTI.

Mumbai weather is cloudy today with heavy thundershowers and lightning across the city.

Several other flights were cancelled and travellers were told to expect delayed departures while the main runway remains closed.

Air services were hit badly, with 161 domestic and worldwide flights cancelled till Wednesday 8 pm due to heavy rain. Main runway to remain shut till 2 pm.

Heavy spells of intermittent rains accompanied by strong winds completely threw the normal life of Mumbai and its suburbs completely out of gear on Wednesday.

Traffic movement has eased in most areas as the waterlogging has reduced significantly.

The city's critical lifeline, the suburban trains and the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) bus services, were also reported running with delays. According to reports, a high tide of 4.45 metres is expected to occur at around 12 pm.
