North Korea: US Exploiting Student's Death

Otto Warmbier: tortured to death or tragic accident?

A coroner's report on Otto Warmbier revealed small scars, but no signs of torture, were found on the American student's body - the shocking news coming hours after his parents' detailed the horrifying shape Warmbier was in after 15 months imprisonment in North Korea.

But a coroner disputed claims by Warmbier's parents that his teeth were damaged, and said her office's examination indicated he had been well tended in the year since something - they can not say what - starved his brain of oxygen and eventually killed him.

The coroner also found Otto's overall condition to be "well-developed, well-nourished", noting only there had been a collection of scars on his body.

North Korea has denied mistreating Warmbier, who was arrested in January 2016 for allegedly stealing a propaganda banner while visiting with a tour group. In June this year he was released on medical grounds but returned home to Cincinnati, Ohio in a coma, and died only days later. "They're terrorists. They kidnapped Otto, tortured him, they intentionally injured him".

"We are never going to know unless the people who were there at that time came forward and said 'this is what happened to Otto, '" she added.

"The teeth are natural and in good fix", while his nose and ears show "no remarkable adjustment", according to the report.

They also noted that their son appeared to be blind and deaf, and that he had a large scar on his right foot.

According to the medical report, Warmbier died primarily from "complications of chronic anoxic/ischemic encephalopathy", meaning his brain was deprived of oxygen.

Responding to the claims about Mr Warmbier's teeth, Ms Sammarco said she was "surprised" at the parents' statement.

"We don't have enough information about what happened to Otto at that initial insult to draw any concrete conclusions" about how Warmbier died, Dr. Lakshmi Sammarco told a news conference at her Corryville office.

"There is no evidence of trauma to the lower teeth or mandible on imaging or by physical examination", Sammarco said.

Warmbier's parents, who declined to have a full autopsy performed on his body, spoke publicly about his death for the first time this week. The us president has accused North Korea of having "tortured beyond the imaginable".

US President Donald Trump tweeted Warmbier was "tortured beyond belief" at the hands of North Korea.

His 17-month-long incarceration added an emotional undercurrent to the hostile relationship between North Korea and the United States and played a role in the Trump administration's decision to bar Americans from visiting the country as of September 1.

Regardless of whether or not North Korea tortured Warmbier, he would nearly certainly still be alive had North Korea not detained him on wild charges.
