North Korea's belligerent stand could spark large-scale conflict, warns Putin

NEW YORK NY- AUGUST 29 United States ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley walks into a UN Security Council emergency meeting over North Korea's latest missile launch

Attempts to pressure North Korea into stopping its nuclear missile program through sanctions are "misguided and futile", Russian President Vladimir Putin warned, adding that threats and provocations would only add more fuel to the fire.

"It is essential to resolve the region's problems through direct dialogue involving all sides without advancing any preconditions (for such talks)", Putin, whose country shares a border with North Korea, wrote on the Kremlin's web site.

In an article published on the Kremlin's website on September 1, Putin obliquely criticized US warnings of potential military action and said stepping up the pressure on Pyongyang won't solve the problem.

In his published comments, Putin said the situation was "balancing on the brink of a large-scale conflict".

Putin said a roadmap drawn up by Russian Federation and China - which have relatively warm ties with Pyongyang and wield influence as permanent members of the UN Security Council - was a way to gradually reduce the tensions.

Four US F-35B fighter jets joined two US B-1B bombers and four South Korean F-15 fighter jets in the joint US-South Korean flyover of the Korean Peninsula, an official with the South Korean air force told CNN.

Russian Federation participated in the six-party talks, which occurred in the mid-2000's in an attempt to get North Korea to abandon its then burgeoning nuclear program.

"We have a common goal - denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, so that neither the North nor the South, the US and us [Russia] have nuclear weapons", Lavrov said.

Nuclear-armed North Korea on Tuesday fired a ballistic missile over Japan into the Pacific, escalating tensions over its atomic programme which have led to bellicose exchanges between Washington and Pyongyang.

Russian Federation has frequently expressed concern about North Korea's violations of UN Security Council resolution restricting its nuclear and missile activities. "Talking is not the answer!"

Trump said last month Pyongyang would "be met with fire and fury" if it continued to threaten the U.S. The US, UK and other Western allies are prone to impose new heavy sanctions on Pyongyang even outside the UN Security Council.
