Pakistan must change approach towards terror groups

Analysts describe nuclear test conducted by North Korea as threat to region peace

During the visit, the foreign minister will hold meetings with China's State Councillor for Foreign Affairs Yang Jiechi and Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

Only a day earlier, the foreign office in Islamabad, as well as defence minister Khurram Dastagir, had rejected the BRICS declaration, saying there were no safe havens for terrorists inside Pakistan.

He said most of the terrorists being killed in Afghanistan belonged to the Haqqani network, while attacks in Pakistan also emanated from that country.

It noted that while the presence of India in the bloc "clearly influenced the language of the declaration in implicitly pointing towards Pakistan, but China, Russia, Brazil and South Africa will only have added their voices to the growing chorus of concern because of genuine considerations of their own".

The minister told that Pakistan's defence is in strong hands, and unnecessary threats are being raised after US President Donald Trump's statements against Pakistan. "We, in this regard, express concern on the security situation in the region and violence caused by the Taliban, ISIL/DAISH, Al Qaida and its affiliates including Eastern Turkistan Islamic Movement, Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, the Haqqani network, Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed, TTP and Hizb ut-Tahrir", said the declaration which was issued during the summit.

"We strongly condemn terrorist attacks resulting in death to innocent Afghan nationals...."

To the apparent surprise of Islamabad, China came out in support of the BRICS declaration slamming Pakistan-linked terrorist groups. "This will irritate Pakistan". A range of punitive measures reportedly is being considered, though, such as increasing diplomatic and economic pressure, and intensifying and expanding anti-terrorism drone strikes inside Pakistan. This is too costly to China.

"All this said, I don't think this will lead to any policy shifts in Pakistan". Pakistan will be very upset.

Washington and Kabul have long accused Islamabad of turning a blind eye to the issue of safe havens for Afghan militant groups.

The Pentagon has long accused Pakistan of harboring numerous groups highlighted in the BRICS documents, including the terrorists who operate in Afghanistan, which also shares a direct border with China.

He lamented that global community failed to acknowledge Pakistan's anti-terrorism operations. "The BRICS nations have named the organisations as the first step, and the next steps are to share information and build a security mechanism", Song added.
