Russian helicopter fires missile injuring bystanders

On September 18, Russian leader Vladimir Putin visited it to inspect the drills.

Video has emerged of a Russian attack helicopter seeming to fire on a group of bystanders during the major military exercises Russia has been holding over the past week.

Russia's military exercises were displayed in terrifying detail in a series of shock photos released today.

Another video shows the cockpit view as the pilot flies over the scene before the rockets suddenly fire towards the ground.

The press service did not say when the incident occurred and it was not clear whether it was denying that it happened during Zapad 2017, which started on September 14. It said the accident happened Sunday or Monday, and that the video was provided by an unidentified witness. The missiles fired on their own accord because of a technical glitch and seriously injured audience members, who "were most likely journalists", according to an unnamed source who spoke to the Russian news site 66.ru. As commander-in-chief of Russia's armed forces, Mr Putin observed the simulated battles along with a number of top generals at the start of this week. Some 13,000 soldiers, plus hundreds of tanks and other vehicles, are taking part in the joint Russian-Belarussian exercise.

Fontanka.ru said the incident occurred on September 18 and left one person with concussion.

The Russian military's Western Military District acknowledged Tuesday that the video was genuine.

The military said the incident was caused by the failure of the helicopter's targeting system. "As a result of the strike by the unguided rocket, one truck without people in it suffered damage".

"All the reports on social media about a barrage of rockets hitting a crowd of journalist and a large number of casualties are either a deliberate provocation or someone's personal stupidity".
