Sydney Airport Flights Grounded, Major Delays Expected

Sydney Airport Dramas

Authorities are expecting a backlog of delayed flights at Sydney Airport to clear after a computer glitch forced the cancellation of dozens of flights this morning.

So far, it's unknown when flights will be able to take off - stranding passengers on the first day of school holidays and causing chaos at the airport.

The airline confirmed the issue with a tweet: "flights are delayed due to an @AirservicesNews system issue".

Power in the traffic systems operations went down with air traffic control having to revert to a manual process for departing flights, at a reduced rate.

Sydney Airport said in a message posted to its official Twitter feed that the "issue has now been resolved".

"We do anticipate a possible flow on effect later today however we encourage passengers to check with their airline for the most up to date information on their particular flight". "We are working to rectify the issue while managing traffic safely".

Wellington Airport's website showed Air New Zealand flights out of Wellington to Auckland, Christchurch and Sydney had been cancelled on Monday night.

Travellers should contact their airline for flight updates.
