The ridiculous expulsion of Uber from London

Sadiq Khan defends TFL over Uber decision

01:22

"We haven't been asked to make any changes", he added.

"I want London to be at the forefront of innovation and new technology and to be a natural home for exciting new companies that help Londoners by providing a better and more affordable service", Khan said.

London's mayor said Saturday that people angry about the decision by transit authorities to strip Uber of its license to operate in the city should blame the ride-hailing company itself.

It said Uber's "approach and conduct demonstrate a lack of corporate responsibility in relation to a number of issues which have potential public safety and security implications", citing concerns over background checks of drivers.

Save Your Uber in London was set up on the Change.org website after it was announced the firm would not have its licence renewed when it expires on September 30.

"Uber is expected to appeal to the magistrates" court under the Private Vehicles (London) Act 1998, with the court having the power to either reverse the decision or issue a license for a period less than the usual 5 years.

"To defend the source of livelihood for 40 thousand drivers and consumer choice of millions of Londoners, sign the petition demanding to cancel the decision to ban Uber in London", - stated in the text of the proclamation.

By 1400 GMT on Saturday, almost 540,000 people had signed although it was not clear how many of them were in London.

More than half a million people signed an online petition in less than 24 hours by Saturday afternoon backing Uber's fight to save its auto operations in London, mirroring profound economic and political disagreements in Britain.

London's Mayor Sadiq Khan stands by the decision made by TfL.

"We'd like to know what we can do to get this right".

Customers are also unhappy with the decision of TfL.

Innovation director at the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) said: "It's not in the interests of our economy, people in London and in this case, drivers, to restrict new products and services". It flagged up Uber's approach to how medical certificates were obtained - for example, drivers using an online GP service via video rather than having a check in person as the regulations insist.

In a sign of early political opposition to London's move, Greg Hands, the minister for London in the Conservative government, hit out at what he called a "blanket ban" on Uber.

But he also suggested that Uber might eventually be allowed to continue operating in London.

Uber drivers like James Farrar, the chairman of the Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain's United Private Hire Drivers branch, wondered how they would pay their bills.
