Tighter sanctions on North Korea could have a harsh humanitarian impact

Mattis Says Diplomacy Best Course Against North Korea

North Korea carried out a massive nuclear test on 3 September which was widely condemned at the UN.

A shallow 3.5-magnitude natural disaster which hit North Korea near the country's nuclear test site on Saturday was not the result of a fresh nuclear test, China's seismic service said, after initially reporting a "suspected explosion".

Lewis finds similarities between the current situation surrounding North Korea and the events that led to China's 1966 test, which was driven by US doubts of Chinese capabilities to place nuclear weapons on ballistic missiles.

We now see bans on fishery exports and textile exports.

Commenting on their assessment of the quake, the South Korean official said "several methods" had been used to work out whether the incident was natural or manmade.

China had reported earlier Saturday that the quake was likely caused by an explosion, raising fears that North Korea had conducted a fresh nuclear test.

Beijing has repeatedly expressed concern about the rise of tensions over North Korea and, while it too has signed up for the increasingly tough United Nations sanctions, it has also urged a return to talks and for all parties to exercise restraint.

Lewis named the hypothetical North Korean test as such because of an earlier American end-to-end test of a nuclear-tipped Polaris submarine launched ballistic missile called Frigate Bird on May 6, 1962.

The U.S. Geological Survey and Japan's Meteorological Agency both detected the tremor but said they could not judge the cause.

The site of the tremor is close to where the regime on 3 September claimed to have detonated a thermonuclear weapon, in its sixth and most powerful nuclear test to date.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Thursday that China is firmly committed to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula during his speech at the General Debate of the 72nd session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly.

Trump has been pushing China to use its deep economic ties with North Korea to pressure Kim Jong Un's regime to back down from developing nuclear weapons.

While the USA pushed for a full ban on exports of oil to North Korea ahead of a vote on Resolution 2375, China and Russian Federation objected, supporting limits on exports instead of a full ban. Because Chinese is the main trading partner with North Korea anyway.

In the almost three weeks since, as leaders of North Korea and the United States have exchanged insults, the world has braced itself for another show of force by the North.

On Friday, China announced it would limit its exports of refined petroleum products to North Korea beginning in October 1 to comply with United Nations resolutions.

North Korea's state media issued a statement Saturday from the National Peace Committee of Korea describing Trump as "wicked" and "a rabid dog".

Stanford News Service interviewed two Stanford experts about the escalating situation between the two countries and what options leaders have on the table when it comes to North Korea.
