Tropical Storm Lee could be near hurricane strength by next week

6 ways this hurricane season is different

For that reason, the hurricane center has issued tropical storm and storm surge watches for part of the North Carolina coast.

Update 11 a.m.: Hurricane Maria's forecast track has shifted slightly closer to the USA coastline with the most western edge of the cone skimming offshore of the Outer Banks. A storm surge watch has been issued for the cost of NC from Cape Lookout northward to Duck.

Parts of far eastern North Carolina may see some fringe impacts and tropical storm conditions, while the entire East Coast of the United States will continue to see higher than usual surf along with plenty of rip currents through most of the upcoming week. Those on the Carolina and mid-Atlantic coasts are warned to monitor the storm's progress.

Along with Maria, Hurricane Lee, a Category 1 storm on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale, is churning in the central Atlantic and isn't a threat to land, the hurricane center said. Strong wind shear can prevent tropical development or shred apart mature tropical storms or hurricanes. Eight to 10 foot waves would also be possible along the coast as a result of Maria along with.5 to 3 inches of rain, wind gusts between 40 and 74 miles per hour and unsafe rip currents.

The hurricane center said it is "likely that some direct impacts will occur along portions of the coast by midweek". "I think there will be some heavy surf along the coast, and maybe as you get towards the Outer Banks, there will be a bit of wind". Well, there's been a lot of consistency with model runs over the last several days that show the storm keeping well off shore.

And one week before monster category 5 Hurricane Irma ripped through the Carribean before making landfall in Florida. According to The Weather Channel, it's now located more than 500 miles south-southeast of Hatteras, North Carolina, moving north at about 9 mph. Temperatures will reach the low and middle 80s Saturday under partly to mostly sunny skies.

Maria is not now forecast to impact metro Atlanta. Unsafe surf and rip current conditions through the weekend are forecast.

Tropical Storm Lee regenerated on Friday after falling apart early this week.

As the storm bends more towards the north by the start of the workweek, it's likely it will slow down even more and could stall offshore of North Carolina.
