Turkish leaders call for end to violence in Myanmar in Eid messages

21 dead after Rohingya boats capsized in Naf

Media reports said Myanmar security forces used disproportionate force, displacing thousands of Rohingya villagers and destroying their homes with mortars and machine guns.

The treatment of about 1.1 million Muslim Rohingya in Myanmar has become the biggest challenge for national leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been accused by Western critics of not speaking out on behalf of a minority who have long complained of persecution. From the time of the UPA government, when the Myanmar junta was cooperating with India on flushing out safe havens for Northeast militants, New Delhi has always felt it "unwise" to make any statements that would be perceived in Myanmar as "pro-Rohingya".

In the past week alone, up to 400 people were killed in fighting after Rohingya insurgents "attacked security forces" while the military responded with a "huge counter-offensive", writes The Guardian.

On Thursday, Bangladesh coastguards found the bodies of 17 Rohingya, many of them children, who drowned when their boats capsized as they attempted to flee.

The rag-tag unit has a real fight on its hands against Myanmar's well-equipped army, which has been offered military assistance from Bangladesh to root out rebels near the border.

In the wake of the report, Aung San Suu Kyi has accused global aid workers of helping "terrorists" in the region.

As the country's army is carrying out arson attacks, Rohingyas are making desperate attempts to flee the atrocities. "It's mostly women and children".

From Bangladesh, many Rohingya have crossed a porous border into Hindu-majority India, where they are starting to get vilified by some right-wing groups.

The UN says 38,000 Rohingya have reached Bangladesh, some using overland routes and others crossing the Naf River.

The IOM said it was hard to estimate the number of people stranded in the no man's land at the border between the neighbors, but added there were "hundreds and hundreds" of people stuck there. Tens of thousands of Rohingya refugees are believed to be stuck at the border to Bangladesh.

"As Burmese security forces act to prevent further violence, they have a responsibility to adhere to global humanitarian law, which includes refraining from attacking innocent civilians and humanitarian workers and ensuring assistance reaches those in need", Haley said.

Indian prime minister Narendra Modi's Hindu nationalist government said last month it was going to expel all Rohingya, even those registered with the United Nations refugee agency, drawing criticism from aid groups and some politicians.

Bangladeshi border guards have tried to keep them out, but usually relent when pressured, and thousands could be seen Friday making their way across muddy rice fields.

"I am also going to speak to Kofi Annan, special envoy of the United Nations, today", he told reporters in southern province of Antalya.

In a fresh wave of violence, hundreds of Rohingya Muslims have been mercilessly killed by the Burmese army over the past week. They are often subjected to violence.

Reports streaming from the area suggest the military has torched over 10 Rohingya settlements in the crisis-stricken Rakhine State.
