US Open: Petra Kvitova's win is match of the tournament

Cilic ousted, teen Shapovalov wins at US Open

It is so incredible for Petra Kvitova to reach this quarterfinal less than a year after she was attacked with a knife in her own home and had to undergo surgery on her dominant left hand as a result.

Muguruza was having a strong season, adding a Wimbledon championship as her second Grand Slam title after winning the French Open a year ago. She's one of the biggest hitters and a talented player.

Hard feelings aside, even Wozniacki conceded she understood the business side of the sport and Sharapova's place in it. "She's a leftie as well, so that makes it a little bit more tricky".

"I think Billie Jean King put it best: "Pressure is privilege".

But now she's in the quarters here, and hasn't dropped a set.

Kvitova's game is as natural as she is, as unaffected as this woman who reduced Li Na to tears with her eloquence at the Chinese player's retirement ceremony and has won the WTA sportsmanship award five times. I didn't know how it would end and if it ends here on the big stage, it's a happy ending.

In her way is Petra Kvitova, undoubtedly the comeback story of the year.

Asked whether those championships, long ago as they were, offer her any advantage against other players, Williams joked that if other players decide to just hand over matches, she'd gladly take it.

"I came here without any expectations", Kvitova said. She served a 15-month ban for that, returning to the tour this April with a ranking too low to get into Grand Slam events.

Kvitova has knocked off third seed Garbine Muguruza 7-6 (7-3) 6-3 in the fourth round of the US Open.

It was a terrific performance from the 27-year-old two-time Wimbledon champion and she will now take on American Venus Williams, a two-time victor of the final Grand Slam of the season, after she ousted Carla Suarez Navarro in three sets, winning 6-3 3-6 6-1.

"I'm really enjoying it more than before", she said after the match. The Russian started out with motivation in her match against Latvia's Anastasija Sevastova, winning the first set 7-5, but then ultimately wilted in the next two sets, going out on Arthur Ashe on Sunday.

Venus Williams, of the United States, returns a shot from Carla Suarez-Navarro, of Spain, during the fourth round of the U.S. Open tennis tournament, Sunday, Sept. 3, 2017, in NY. "She played very good". "I'm not sure where (Wozniacki) is", said the wildcard. She was a finalist at both the Australian Open and Wimbledon, and is now into her 39th quarterfinal at a major after beating Spain's Carla Suarez-Navarro on Sunday. In the quarters, Carreno Busta will play No. 29 Diego Schwartzman of Argentina, while No. 17 Sam Querrey of the United States takes on No. 28 Kevin Anderson of South Africa.

Stephens has won 12 of her last 14 matches.
