USA citizen fighting for ISIS in Syria surrenders to US-backed forces

Troops have moved in to former medical centres

The United States military has in its custody an American person who surrendered to Syrian Democratic Forces after fighting for ISIS in Syria, NBC News reported.

"Syrian Democratic Forces turned over to USA forces an American citizen who surrendered to SDF on or around September 12", Maj.

Later Thursday, a spokesman for the US-led coalition fighting the terror group in Syria and Iraq said any detainees would be "transported humanely" to the custody or their nation's authorities and referred further questions to the State Department.

Col. Ryan Dillon, the spokesman for the coalition in Iraq and Syria, could not confirm the buses reached their final destination and said the coalition had not had persistent surveillance on them for days. This could mean that the American ISIS fighters are now slashed in numbers.

Maj. Adrian Rankine-Galloway, a Pentagon spokesman, says the man surrendered to Syrian Democratic forces around Tuesday and has been turned over to US military forces. "The Coalition's mission is to defeat ISIS in Syria and Iraq, and we will pursue ISIS fighters regardless of nationality", he said.

The Justice Department in July charged a terrorism suspect, who is not a USA citizen, in a Philadelphia federal court after Spanish officials turned the suspect over to US custody.

On the campaign trail, Trump indicated he was open to detaining US citizens at Guantánamo Bay and trying them at the military commissions there.

It is not the first time an American citizen fighting for IS has been detained.
