When will Uber stop operating in London?

TfL's licensing decision cites various criticisms, including Uber's approach to reporting criminal offences and how medical certificates and Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service ("EDBS") checks were obtained.

Transport for London, which regulates private auto services in the city, said that Uber demonstrated a "lack of corporate responsibility" related to various actions like the company's apparent use of a controversial software program called "Greyball" and allegations of sexual assault of passengers.

Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi wrote in a letter that they would appeal against the decision on behalf of the city's population but he added that they must do so with the knowledge that they must change.

Transport for London's decision to cancel Uber's private hire licence has angered numerous 3.5 million Londoners who have come to rely on the cheaper alternatives to black cabs. The company has 21 days to appeal, a window in which it can still legally operate, and Khosrowshahi said in the open letter that Uber indeed plans to contest the decision.

If true, these alarming events provide ample reason for TfL to remove Uber from the city's roads.

Now BBC reports that London Mayor Sadiq Khan, who backed Transport for London's original decision, has "welcomed" the apology and notified regulators that they should meet with Khosrowshahi. It claimed that Uber's concessions were likely to involve passenger safety and employment benefits for drivers, including possible holiday pay and limits on work hours. It also objected to Uber's handling of driver background checks and said Uber had not adequately explained whether it used software called "Greyball" to mislead British regulators the way the company had misled some Americans.

Transport for London has the mayor's support. Transport for London's announcement Friday states that the company will not receive a license renewal.

"Obviously I am pleased that he has acknowledged the issues that Uber faces in London".

"The research suggests that Londoners generally hold a positive view of Uber and have had an enjoyable experience when using them". Uber said it will appeal, during which time it can continue operating.

If you're freaking out that you've only got a few days left to grab an Uber home - don't worry.

"This was one of the odd things around the TfL notice yesterday is they are the ones who do all of the checks and license the drivers".

The subsidiary responsible for the ride-hailing app Uber has been told it isn't considered "fit and proper" so won't have its license renewed on 30 September.

Previous year the United Kingdom courts ruled that Uber drivers should be considered employees, forming a landmark decision that could have implications for other gig economy services.
