Wildfire Near Burbank Destroys Thousands of Acres, Forces Evacuations

Hey San Francisco, get ready for the heat — high of 96

Fire broke out around a major freeway in the Sun Valley area of Los Angeles on Friday (Sept 1) afternoon, forcing the shut down of a 20.9km stretch of the roadway and threatening nearby homes.

The La Tuna wildfire is now the largest wildfire by acreage in Los Angeles history.

They said they have no new information on firefighters' efforts to save the grove.

Firefighters continued to battle the fast-spreading fire whose growth was fueled by erratic winds and rising temperatures Saturday. Authorities soon ordered mandatory evacuations, street by street, for neighborhoods in Burbank closest to Verdugo Mountain Park. Those aircraft continue retardant drops to help firefighters who are battling wildfires amid severe heatwave.

Firefighters said erratic fire behavior caused by strong, gusting winds made it hard to predict what areas may be at risk.

Additional LAFD resources were en route and crews from the Angeles National Forest, Los Angeles County and Glendale Fire departments were assisting, Stewart said.

According to Terrazas and the L.A. Mayor, this is the largest wildfire that has ever occurred in the city, and that this is the first time in 30 years that the record is broken. The structures destroyed had no brush clearance and they "were isolated into the foothills, very hard for us to protect", he said. Police expect mandatory evacuation orders to remain in place into Sunday afternoon.

"Honestly, it's my worst fear", Goldman said.

"We had a little bit of rain, and that was enough to push the fire in a totally different direction", the captain said. "I'm constantly checking and then really could not believe the scope of what I was seeing". They still don't know when it's going to be available for L.A. citizens again. "I'm a pastor and we're praying and that's why we're here, so the fire will stop".

On Saturday night, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti declared the local emergency, the mayor also asked Governor Jerry Brown to declare the emergency, "so that state and federal assistance can be provided to the city as quickly as possible".

It is only 10% contained.

One home has been lost in the fire, according to the latest statement from the LA Fire Department.

About 300 acres have charred, and more than 400 firefighters from the Glendale and Los Angeles areas have been called in.
