With Amazon.com looking for giant new HQ, Bay Area raises hand

Amazon to add as many as 50000 jobs, searches for second headquarters

The statement clearly seems meant to make it clear to cities that his company is a huge economic fish to catch, noting "Amazon expects to invest over $5 billion in construction and grow this second headquarters to include as many as 50,000 high-paying jobs". Based on the company's wishlist of urban amenities it wants in its new headquarters, it sounds like Amazon is trying to avoid those same growing pains this time around.

Leaders from cities across the US are vying for a chance to reap in the lucrative bid, and Tulsa has already proclaimed interest to bid for Amazon's new headquarters. From 2010 to 2016, Amazon estimates its investments in Seattle resulted in an additional $38 billion to the city's economy. Is Seattle continuing to hold Amazon's growth an option?

Amazon's arrival might transform an area: Until 10 years ago, the neighbourhood near Seattle's campus just north of downtown was dotted with auto parts stores and low-rent apartments. "Seattle Mayor Ed Murray is one of them; he pushed a $15 minimum wage law that has cost the poorest the most, and won a tax hike on higher earners earlier this summer".

But it might be a good thing for Amazon to scorn the "liberal", coastal cities, David Leonhardt argued in The New York Times' Opinion Today newsletter.

Amazon says any city hoping to score the investment will have to meet some key criteria, including a prime location, access to mass transit, and proximity to an global airport.

In addition to physical benefits from such a headquarters - like job opportunities, capital investment and new infrastructure - Kansas City would enjoy other intangibles, Cowden said.

So what will it take to get the Amazon headquarters to be built here in St. Louis?

Many in Seattle's business and political class are reading Amazon's surprise decision to seek a second headquarters elsewhere as a rebuke of the progressive policies-some call them anti-business-that the city has enacted in recent years. Tulsa Mayor G.T. Bynum has already publically said the city would be a flawless community, and the Tulsa Chamber of Commerce is showing enthusiasm as well for the idea.

"With our first-class workforce and easy access to major highways like I-95 and the northeast corridor railway, the First State would make a great location for Amazon's second North American headquarters".

Whether that will give Fresno a leg up on other cities isn't clear. Indeed, the city's physical limitations will eventually impinge on Amazon's ability to attract and retain the talent that is its life blood.

In July this year, Amazon has doubled the size as well as the work force in its Chicago office.

Last month, as Wisconsin was finalizing a $3 billion incentive package for technology maker Foxconn to build a plant, Dayton was invited to critique the deal during a Minnesota Public Radio interview.

And if that seems too cautious, consider how Seattle has come to feel about hosting the original Amazon HQ.

But does Arizona realistically have a shot at securing Amazon's HQ2? This has become expected behavior from corporations that bring with them the best jobs in the economy.

"This move will not be cost driven". "We are very excited and we believe that Detroit will make an extremely strong pitch to Amazon".
