Amazon announces independent teen accounts (with parental oversight)

Amazon now lets teenagers shop via separate logins attached to their parents' accounts

The company announced today that kids ages 13-17 will be able to use an Amazon Household account to shop Amazon's online marketplace - with limited independence, of course.

On the other end of the spectrum, the move could be seen as an effort to indoctrinate teens and get them addicted to Amazon early, before they become loyal to a competitor.

Amazon Prime Student will be available to anyone with a.edu email address and feature the same free two-day shipping and video streaming services as the full-price version. From there, the teenager is free to create their own username and password and then use that to log into the Amazon App.

For parents, an email or text message is sent when the order is "placed" - that is, when the teen is ready to order, but the item isn't actually purchased yet. Parents can review each item, its cost and the payment method being used before finalizing the transaction. This means that a parent with a Prime account can share the benefits that come with it with their children. The accounts will allow them to search and shop for items, but there are some restrictions so that parents don't have to worry about their bank accounts.

"By default, parents approve every order", Amazon said. "We've listened to families and have built a great experience for both teens and parents". In this case, the parent will receive a notification with an itemized list of the order, and the option remains to cancel it or initiate a refund if it is too late to cancel.

If you prefer to avoid handing over your credit card outright whenever your teens want or need something on Amazon, the retail giant has you covered.
