Bots behind rise in Rahul Gandhi's twitter popularity?

Rahul Gandhi

News Agency ANI put out a story this morning, questioning whether Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi's twitter followers were automated ones "mass retweeting" his posts.

It made an analysis of Gandhi's retweet of US President Donald Trump's tweet praising American-Pakistani relations with a caption "Modi ji quick, looks like President Trump needs another hug".

A war of words broke out between Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi and Minister of Textiles Smriti Irani on Twitter on Friday wherein, the latter attacked the former while claiming that the Congress will lose elections despite its efforts. She tweeted that Rahul Gandhi is planning to sweep the elections in Kazakhstan, Indonesia and Russian Federation. The tweet quickly reached 20,000 retweets and now has touched 30,000 re-tweets. Recently a news agency scrutinised Rahul Gandhi's twitter account and drew shocking a conclusion that Rahul's resurgence has some unknown followers supporting the cause.

The report states, "Further scrutiny of these Twitter accounts showed that the follower list was usually under 10 users and retweets comprised of random topics from across the world and those of Rahul Gandhi".

After the Rahul Gandhi controversy erupted this morning, Union Minister Smriti Irani also tweeted the ANI story.

Rathore, MoS for Youth Affairs and Sports, tweeted, "In sports, this would come under "Doping"...hey wait! does "dope" remind you of someone".

Just hours after the report was published, Rajeev Chandrashekhar, a BJP MP, suggested that the Congress was taking "desperate measures". Responding to Irani's tweet, that bots could have pushed Rahul's tweets, Spandana wrote, "Why do we need them when we have you?" When asked about Rahul's twitter growth AAP had earlier raised questions whether the retweets or real and it appears they were not.

The BJP alleged that Twitterbots, or fake accounts, located outside India were behind the recent rise in Rahul's popularity on the social media platform. Why are they not answering. Why are they not answering questions raised by him (Gandhi) about farmers?

Amit Malviya, the in-charge of the BJP's national information technology cell, launched an all-out attack on Rahul.
