Chrome Cleanup Tool Integrated Into Windows Browser, Helps Remove Unwanted Software

Right on schedule, Chrome 62 for Windows, Linux and Mac began rolling out yesterday and with it came a heap of updates that look to be laying the groundwork for the Google Assistant's arrival to Chrome and Chrome OS. With the latest update, when Chrome detects that user settings have been changed without user consent, it will offer to restore the modified settings.

With Google Chrome beefing up its security features with a more powerful Chrome Cleanup tool, there are worries that the web browser might negatively impact computer performance.

Extensions can help make Chrome more useful-like by customizing tab management. It shows an alert when the browser detects unwanted software and offers a way to remove it. Chrome users have previously been able to use the standalone Chrome Cleanup Tool to remove harmful software.

However, even with sandboxing, automatic updates, and Safe Browsing technology, unwanted software still manages to find a way on to our PCs using Chrome.

Google estimates the new security features will help "tens of millions" of Chrome users clear up security problems in the next few days. This new tweak - called hijacked settings detection - is claimed to have helped millions of Chrome users recover from unwanted settings since last month.

How does Chrome detect something wrong? We worked with IT security company ESET to combine their detection engine with Chrome's sandbox technology, ' explains Google's Philippe Rivard, product manager for Chrome Cleanup, in the company's announcement.

According to ESET, the service acts as a monitoring tool that warns users of potential threats and proposed removal options when it encounters unwanted software. Google's partner in this project is the cybersecurity company ESET, the brain behind Nod32 Antivirus solution.

From functionality perspective, it lacks preventive dynamic on-access scanning, i.e.it doesn't monitor the system all the time. It only removes that falls under Google's Unwanted Software Policy.
