Football Legend, Hall of Famer YA Tittle Dies, 90

Y.A. Tittle

Pro Football Hall of Famer Yelberton Abraham (Y.A.) Tittle has passed away at the age of 90.

Tittle was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1971, and his No. 14 jersey is retired by the Giants. Under coach Bernie Moore, LSU had employed a single-wing attack, but that called for a tailback who could run and pass. Tittle was strictly a passer, and that turned the Tigers into a T-formation team with a modern concept of the quarterback position. Prior to his time in San Francisco, Tittle spent three years with the Baltimore Colts and then four seasons with the New York Giants following his time with the 49ers. He held National Football League records for passing yards, touchdowns, pass attempts (3,817), completions (2,118), total offense (29,338) and games (176) when he retired.

Tittle joined the 49ers in 1951 following the end of the Baltimore franchise the season before.

Tittle's 1957 season was remunerated with many honors: The quarterback was named alliance MVP by UPI, he was named to the Pro Bowl and furthermore named first-group All-Pro without precedent for his vocation.

Tittle resigned after the 1964 season with 33,070 vocation yards and 242 profession touchdown passes.

The next season, Tittle broke the NFL single-season record by passing for 36 touchdowns, becoming the first player in league history to have at least 30 TD passes in consecutive seasons. Tittle was suffering from severe dementia.

Tittle was named the MVP of an amusement that finished in a 0-0 tie with Arkansas.
