No irregularities in Sherin's adoption: State govt to MEA

Father of Sherin Mathews on Suicide Watch in Dallas Co. Jail

The body of 3-year-old Sherin Mathews was found Sunday in suburban Dallas in a culvert under a road about a half-mile from her parents' home.

Wesley Mathews, who adopted Sherin Mathews from India, presented his new story after going to the Richardson Police Department with his lawyer on Monday afternoon.

Mathews told police the girl had been malnourished when she was adopted and needed to eat whenever she was awake to help her gain weight. Sherin went missing on October 7 after Wesley made her to stand outside their house because of refusing to finish her milk , As Reported By TOI.

After police found her body in a culvert near the family's home, he told detectives he forced her to drink the milk and did nothing as she choked and died at the home.

The Dallas County medical examiner has not yet determined the girl's cause of death.

The couple, Wesley Mathews and Sini Mathews, visited the Mother Teresa Anaath Seva Ashram in Nalanda with their elder daughter and the video shows Sherin, who was then named as Saraswati, is crying just like any other child in the hands of strangers. He was arrested and charged with felony injury to a child, which carries a sentence of up to life in prison. Mathews has been placed on suicide watch in an isolated cell within the facility. The manager of the orphanage in India where Sherin was adopted said the toddler was cheerful, healthy and eating well and her prospective parents eager to hear her voice a year ago. He had earlier claimed that she went missing after he sent her outside their home at around 3 am as punishment for not drinking her milk.

"Now that Mr. Mathews has turned himself in to the police and told them what happened to Sherin, we see no need for Mrs. Mathews to endure further police interrogation".

Meanwhile, a petition has been started by community leader Father Thomas Ambalaveli to not hand over the body of Sherin to her parents, and rather to the community, so that a proper memorial and burial service could be done.
