Private auto growth in Singapore to stop

Government to cut car, motorcycle growth rate to zero from February 2018

The upcoming adjustments are not expected to significantly affect the supply of COEs, which is determined largely by the number of vehicle deregistrations, LTA added.

Almost 12 percent of land area in Singapore, one of the world's most expensive places to own a vehicle, is taken up by roads and officials want to ensure the most productive use of the remaining space.

There will be zero growth for vehicles in Categories A, B and D - covering cars and motorcycles - from February next year, down from the current 0.25 per cent annual growth rate.

Global news agency Agence France-Presse (AFP) has published and circulated fake news that the Singapore Government will no longer allow cars on local roads. "As long as incomes continue to grow, it is unlikely for private auto ownership to be a low-priced transport option". How many of those are actually available depends as much on how many cars are de-registered as on the net growth rate being targeted.

Reputed news publications like The Guardian have re-published the piece, entitled Singapore: no more cars allowed on the road, government says, on their website.

The new freeze on vehicle numbers won't apply to trucks and buses for the time being.

The measure, to be reviewed in 2020, is an extension of Singapore's already tough controls on vehicle ownership, which have helped the nation of 5.6 million avoid the traffic jams that choke other Asian cities. Valid for 10 years, the average cost of the certificate is Sg$50,000, making Singapore one of the most expensive countries to buy a vehicle. It also cites major improvements to the mass transit network, including 41 new rail stations and better bus service. Certificates now cost around $50,000 Singapore dollars (US$36,000), so many people rent cars instead.

Government statistics show the number of private vehicles fell from 540,063 in 2013 to 504,160 in 2016.
